Green Week: Meat Free Mondays

Meat Free Mondays

The company that I work for is very health and environmentally conscious.  That’s a good thing.  This week is Green Week and they’re asking us to take the “Meat Free Monday” Pledge.  If we submit our pledge before April 25, 2014, they’ll donate one tree to the National Forest Foundation.

Health Benefits of Meat Free Mondays:

Did you know that by going meatless once a week can help reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity? Not to mention, the cost of eating fruits and vegetables is much cheaper than eating meat and definitely much lighter on the stomach.  My blood type is A+ and according to the book “Eating Right 4 Your Blood Type” people who have blood type A+ naturally have low stomach acid which makes them a prime candidate for adapting a vegetarian lifestyle. We would be considered the proverbial vegetarians.

I’m not new to not eating meat.  I once went six months without eating meat and it did wonders for me.  Of course I lost weight but my skin looked great, not to mention my hair and nails grew like weeds.  I’ve tried getting back to a vegetarian lifestyle but I just simply love meat….that’s just the plain old truth.  I know that it’s not the best thing for me so pledging to do Meatless Mondays sound like something I can do.  It’s a gradual step in the right direction. Eating less meat goes a long way toward helping you to develop a healthy life style. Eating healthy not only affects you but it affects those around you.  Most children inherit their eating habits from their parents and their surrounding environment (school, friends, etc.). So it’s important that parents set good examples by eating a healthy diet and creating a healthy environment for their children.

Environmental Benefits of Meat Free Mondays:

Not only is eating less meat good for your health, eating less meat also helps the environment.  According to the Environmental Working Group, if every American went meatless one day a week for one year, the environmental impact would equal removing 8 million cars from the road.  Whoa…that’s a lot of cars. It can also help limit your carbon footprint and save precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuel.

There are countless documentaries out there that support the cause of going meatless.  Here are four of my favorite ones:

You can find them on Netflix and they are definitely worth watching.  It will enlighten you and also make you think twice before you purchase that next Big Mac.   To learn more about the impact of beef production on the environment, view this short video online: The Secret Life of Beef.

So take the pledge with me today to go meatless every Monday.  Even if you just do one week, it’ll make a huge difference! What other healthy habits do you have that you’d like to share?

Health is Wealth Series: Toothaches are nothing to play with

This week has really been rough for me and it’s not because it’s the first week after my highly anticipated lay-off.  The reason this week has been so rough for me is because I’ve experience the worst feeling of my life…..a toothache.  I don’t know which feeling is worse, a toothache or being shot in the leg.

By the way, I’ve never been shot in the leg….but I might have preferred that over a toothache. 🙂

It was so bad that I was basically bedridden for about two days.  It started aching late Monday night and it grew worse the following day.  I went to the dentist early Tuesday morning but they couldn’t really do anything for me except give me three prescriptions to take because by that time my left jaw was really swollen.  One of the prescriptions was for pain, and the other two were for the infection.

Anyway, to make a long story short, the swelling in my jaw has gone down completely as of today (Friday) but unfortunately I’m going to have to have a root canal.

That sucks.  I hate the dentist.

Have you ever had a root canal?  The pain is terrible but the cost is even worst.  I was told that I would have to pay $883 out of pocket and that’s with insurance…..ouch.  I’d hate to see what that cost would be without it.

I honestly think that amount is a little on the high side, so I’m going to shop around and see if I can get a better deal.  Yes that’s right; you can shop around for a better deal on just about everything from buying a car to having a medical procedure done.  As a matter of fact, I highly recommend it.

So what’s the take away?

The take away is first; take care of your mouth….get regular check-ups.  Don’t let it get out of hand like I did, or it will cost you a lot of unnecessary pain and money.  The entire idea is to avoid paying more money than you have to….but some of us have to learn the hard way. 🙁   Second of all, check out at least three other dentist and compare cost.  Make sure that they are in network with your insurance provider as well as find out the maximum amount your insurance is willing to pay for the procedure you’re having done.  This will give you a good guide to adhere to when selecting a good dentist.  Personal references are also a great way to find a good reparable dentist.

Take a lesson from me, take care of yourself.  You’ve only got one mouth…

When’s the last time you visited the dentist?

Weekly Wrap-up #2: Water Challenge and more…

Well I didn’t win the mega millions jackpot…that sucks, but my office pool did win $150 bucks!  So at least I recouped my initial cost. Despite that, the week was awesome and I hope yours was just as awesome.

Now on to the good stuff.  As you guys know, I vowed to improve my intake of water by pledging to drink at least a minimum of 64 oz. of water every day for the next six weeks.  On the weekends, I’ve decided to give myself a break and drink what I want.  We are now in the second week.

As promised, below is an update on the Health is Wealth Series Water Challenge:

Monday – 64 oz. Yeah!

Tuesday – 64 oz. Yeah!

Wednesday – 50 oz. Almost there.

Thursday – 36 oz. Ah, I hate that.

Friday – 64 oz.  Yeah!

That’s an improvement over last week.  Hopefully next week will be better.

My Quote for the Week:

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.
